House of Bruar is a family-owned Scottish country-living retailer that now ships worldwide with duties included in the price. This review grades only what the store publishes. Nothing was ordered, worn or eaten. Every figure below was read on houseofbruar.com on October 13, 2026.
Nutri Grader normally grades supplements, not tweed. The method does not change: read what the seller commits to in writing, check the date, and ignore the story. A delivery policy gets the same treatment as a supplement label.
This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, Nutri Grader may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That arrangement changed nothing below, and nothing here is medical advice.
- Prices include tax and duties. The Dispatch & Delivery page states that prices quoted online are "inclusive of tax and duties, so there will be no additional charges," read October 13, 2026.
- Free international delivery is offered, but not named. The same page says only that "Free delivery options are available for most countries on our website." No carrier and no transit guarantee is published.
- Dispatch speed is published twice, differently. The delivery page aims to dispatch "within two working days"; the FAQ page says "within 5 days." Rest-of-world orders then take 7 to 10 days after dispatch.
- Returns run 30 days, at your cost. The returns page gives 30 days from purchase in saleable condition, a separate international portal, and states that goods are returned at your own expense.
- The Food Hall is UK-only. Food is "Available to UK customers only," alcohol ships only within the United Kingdom, and food items cannot be added to a clothing order.
What House of Bruar actually is
House of Bruar is a single-site Scottish department store with a large mail-order arm. The About page describes it as "Scotland's premier independent country living retailer," read October 13, 2026.
The store sits in rural Perthshire, just off the A9 at Blair Atholl. The footer gives the postal address as By Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland, PH18 5TW, with no separate trading company named.
The history is specific and checkable. The About page says the store opened in 1995 at the foot of the Falls of Bruar, financed by founder Mark Birkbeck from the sale of his Jumpers chain of high-street shops.
One small contradiction is worth noting. Product pages carry the line "THE HOME OF COUNTRY CLOTHING SINCE 1993," while the About page dates the opening to 1995 and labels 1993 as "The Dream."
The catalog is wide. The main navigation lists ladies, mens, brands, home & gift, food hall, gallery, childrens, fishing, gift vouchers and sale, each with its own subcategory tree.
The brand list is the part most US shoppers will recognize: Barbour, Schoffel, Musto, Aigle, Dubarry, Le Chameau, Harris Tweed, Patagonia, R.M. Williams, Crockett & Jones and The North Face, among others.

Self-reported claims sit on the About page under "Key facts about us": over fifty premium brands, worldwide delivery, three decades of trading, and family ownership. Those are the store's own words, not an audited figure.
What the clothing costs, and what the price actually includes
This is a premium catalog, and the prices say so plainly. The Ladies Bruar Scottish Cashmere Roll Neck, product code TT26131, was listed at $470.00 on October 13, 2026.
The Ladies Cashmere Cable Cardigan, product code TT93002, was listed at $275.00 the same day. Both pages were read from a US connection, with the site set to United States and US Dollar.
Those dollar figures are converted by the store's own localization layer, not a separate US price list. The underlying catalog is priced in pounds, so the number you see will move with the exchange rate.
Depth is the real selling point. The Ladies Cashmere category alone reported "1135 Products" on October 13, 2026, with filters counting 445 crew necks, 101 Aran and cable styles and 182 green pieces.
The product copy is more specific than most retailers publish. The $470 roll neck states 100% Grade A cashmere, made in Scotland, in a 15-gauge two-ply knit, with written hand-wash and drying instructions.

The duty line is what matters most to a US buyer. The Dispatch & Delivery page states that prices quoted online are inclusive of tax and duties, so nothing extra should be demanded on the doorstep.
Treat that as a commitment to check at checkout, not a guarantee. The store does not publish which carrier handles US parcels, nor what happens if a customs charge is raised anyway.
The delivery terms contradict each other in two places
The headline promise is simple. The Dispatch & Delivery page says the store aims to dispatch within two working days, subject to availability, with Friday and Saturday orders taking slightly longer.
The FAQ page says something else. It states the store aims to dispatch "all orders within 5 days of receiving them," with the same Friday and Saturday exception, read on the same day.
Those are both official pages, and they disagree by three days. For planning, use the FAQ figure, because it is the slower of the two promises the store makes.
Transit is only published in the FAQ. UK standard takes 2 to 3 days after dispatch, Ireland and Europe 3 to 5 days, and "the rest of the world" 7 to 10 days after dispatch.
Add those together for a US order. On the store's own numbers, five days to dispatch plus 7 to 10 days in transit means a realistic window of about 12 to 15 days, not a week.

The UK charges are inconsistent too. The delivery page quoted a flat $8.99 standard and $14.00 express, while the delivery tab on product pages quoted 4.95 and 7.95 in pounds on the same day.
Currency conversion does not explain that gap, so one of the two is stale. US buyers are not charged either figure, but it is a sign the policy pages are not kept in sync.
Specialty surcharges are published clearly. Whisky valued over $855.00 ships on an enhanced compensation service for $26.00, and whisky over $4,300.00 or gallery art over $855.00 uses a specialist courier at $260.00.
Seasonal cutoffs are listed as well: December 18 for standard delivery and December 18 at noon for express. That is the detail most gift shoppers go looking for and rarely find.
Returns are 30 days, and you pay the postage
The window is the standard one. The returns page allows a return in saleable condition for refund or exchange "at any time within 30 days of purchase," and the FAQ adds that all labels must be intact.
The cost falls on you. The page states that goods are returned at your own cost and recommends obtaining proof of postage, which is normal for UK retailers and expensive from the United States.
International returns run through a separate portal rather than the UK Royal Mail portal. The returns page points overseas customers to a three-stage label tool hosted on returngo.ai.
Processing is not instant. The store asks for up to 14 days from receipt of your parcel for an exchange to be processed or a refund credited, back to the original payment method.
Two categories cannot come back at all. Food Hall items, including butchery goods and hampers, are excluded for freshness, and earrings are excluded on hygiene grounds.
A separate statutory right sits underneath all of this. The Cancellation Policy grants 14 days from receipt to cancel without giving a reason, with delivery costs reimbursed but return postage still borne by you.
The product pages word it differently again, promising a refund or exchange "within one month of purchase" and adding that return postage is refunded if the return is due to an error on the store's part.
What to do about it: open the parcel the day it lands, decide inside two weeks, and keep every tag and the original packaging until you are sure. The clock and the postage both work against a slow decision.
The Food Hall is the one part US shoppers cannot buy
The Food Hall is the store's most-decorated department, and it is closed to you. The delivery page states that the express food service is "Available to UK customers only," read October 13, 2026.
Alcohol is fenced off the same way. The alcohol policy states that drinks can be purchased from the website "for delivery only within the United Kingdom," which rules out the whisky and the house liqueurs.
Even inside the UK the rules are strict. Food carries a $17.00 express charge, an $86.00 minimum order value, and cannot be combined with a clothing or gift order.
Gallery art is the third exception. The store says fragile gallery items cannot be shipped overseas through the website and asks overseas buyers to phone the Gallery for a bespoke quote.
For a nutrition site the food restriction is the honest headline. If you came for Scottish smoked salmon, hampers or the award-claiming delicatessen, a US address will not get you there today.
The store's own claim that its Food Hall was "declared Best in Scotland by the Guild of Fine Foods" in 2019 sits on its About page, unlinked to any announcement.
We did not verify that award with the Guild. An unconfirmed seal is a seal we discount, exactly as our note on third-party supplement seals explains.
What the ratings actually show
There is a real crowd number here, which is more than most catalog retailers offer. Trustpilot showed a TrustScore of 4.6 out of 5 from 11,944 reviews for The House of Bruar, read October 13, 2026.
The distribution matters more than the average. On that same profile, 80% of reviews were 5-star and 7% were 1-star, with 3% at two stars and 3% at three.
A 7% one-star tail on nearly 12,000 reviews is normal for a mail-order business. It is also the part worth reading before you order, because complaints cluster around the same policies we flagged above.
The store's own reviews page is the weak evidence. It publishes selected testimonials under first names and initials, chosen by the seller, with no date, order value or verification attached.
We give those no weight, the same way we ignore before-and-after copy on a greens powder label. A curated quote wall tells you what the marketing team liked, not what the average order felt like.
The documentation is what carries this review: published materials, published prices, a published duty position, and a published return window. That is a reasonable base for a first order of one item.
Buy it if, skip it if
Buy it if all of these are true:
- You want British country clothing with the fiber content printed on the page, such as 100% Grade A cashmere made in Scotland
- You are comfortable at the $275 to $470 level for knitwear, and you are buying for material and finish rather than performance
- You value duties included in the shown price, so the checkout number is the final number
- You can wait roughly two weeks from order to doorstep on the store's own dispatch and transit figures
- You can decide and return within 30 days, with tags intact, and absorb the cost of posting a parcel back to Scotland
Skip it if any of these are true:
- You want the Food Hall, the hampers or the whisky, none of which ship outside the United Kingdom
- You need free or prepaid return postage, which this store does not offer on international orders
- You need a named carrier and a delivery guarantee, rather than "free delivery options" and a 7 to 10 day estimate
- You are buying fragile gallery artwork, which cannot be ordered overseas through the website at all
- You need the item by a fixed date, since the store publishes two different dispatch promises on two different pages
Paying $470 for a cashmere roll neck is a preference, not a mistake. The framing we use on evidence-graded supplements applies here: decide what you are paying for, then check whether the seller commits to it in writing.
Frequently asked
Does House of Bruar ship to the United States?
Yes. The site localizes to United States and US Dollar, and the Dispatch & Delivery page states that free delivery options are available for most countries, with prices inclusive of tax and duties. Food and alcohol are excluded.
How long does a House of Bruar order take to arrive in the US?
On the store's own figures, roughly 12 to 15 days. The FAQ page cites dispatch within 5 days and 7 to 10 days in transit for the rest of the world. The delivery page cites a faster two-day dispatch.
How much does House of Bruar clothing cost?
The knitwear sits at the premium end. On October 13, 2026 the Bruar Scottish Cashmere Roll Neck was $470.00 and the Cashmere Cable Cardigan $275.00, both shown in US dollars with duties included.
Can I return a House of Bruar order from outside the UK?
Yes, through a separate international returns portal. The window is 30 days from purchase in saleable condition with labels intact, you pay return postage, and refunds can take up to 14 days once the parcel is received.
Is House of Bruar a legitimate retailer?
The evidence says yes. It is a family-owned store trading from a physical site in Perthshire since 1995, with a Trustpilot score of 4.6 from 11,944 reviews read October 13, 2026.
Why is a clothing store reviewed on a supplement site?
It is not our usual beat, and we say so plainly. The method is the one we apply to a magnesium label or an electrolyte mix: check what the seller puts in writing, then cite the date.
Bottom line
House of Bruar is a legible, well-documented retailer with an unusually deep knitwear catalog and a genuinely useful duty position for US buyers. The checkout number should be the final number.
The documentation is strong on materials and weak on logistics. Two official pages give two dispatch promises, two currencies give two UK delivery rates, and no carrier is named for an international parcel.
The return policy is fair but not generous. Thirty days is standard; paying to post a cashmere cardigan back to Perthshire is the cost that should shape how much you order at once.
US food shoppers should look elsewhere. The Food Hall, the hampers and the whisky stop at the UK border, which removes the department this store is best known for at home.
Order one item first, open it immediately, and decide inside two weeks. Prices, policies and the Trustpilot figures above were read on October 13, 2026 and will move.
